The exposition consists of works made based on the "Ready made" principle. By using everyday life objects, from the street environment, that we are used to pass, not paying attention, thus ignoring their aesthetic and dynamic nature. These industrially produced leftovers are selected as artwork materials, randomly and without issues taken out from their intended urban environment. The author calls this creative process "Contemporary Vandalism" because, with his unique work style, it changes the configuration of objects found on the street and gives them a new function, but above all - the chance to stand them out as independent, aesthetic objects. This year, Mikelis Murnieks gratueted Latvian Academy of Arts Bachelor's program in ''Motion.Picture.Sound.'' Also has studied in exchange program at Univeristy of Porto and has participated in several group exhibitions, both in Latvia and abroad. Tarabilda’s seventh solo exhibition, and the works are made using paint leftovers accumulated in the artist’s studio over the last few years, painting on canvas. However, the artist proposes not to call them paintings, adding that the only visible evidence of the artist’s presence is the application of paint with a brush. As art critic Rosana Lukauskaitė writes in the exhibition’s annotation, J. Tarabilda’s latest exhibition Recycled Colours invites us to consider his work as a constantly renewing source of energy and explores how recycling can make both ecological and aesthetic sense. “The question arises whether works similar to color palettes are just reverse reflections of the artwork, or whether they can also become art objects in their own right, with their own meaning and value. Motives of water, trees and bushes, that surrounds buildings and caresses human figures, are telling a story about aiming for a peaceful state of being and creates reality mutations. Artworks become a tool for navigating the surroundings, thoughts and illusions, when they become one. Nature elements, modelled following Realism traditions that are being brought into a cityscape seemingly wards off anxiety, related to the pace of life that keeps on accelerating and the trouble of maintaining the balance between being surrounded by nature and the necessity to follow the laws of urban living. Builevica depicts that the feeling of drowning can also be experienced while being surrounded by concrete walls; that you can get lost in between the piles of no longer necessary, thrown out stuff in the backyards of micro-districts.The painting approach that the artist is using shows her ability to divide the constructions of the environmental perception by layers, and speak about the efforts of a young human being to get a grip off the overall flow and cope with the sometimes claustrophobic feeling of endless rows of enlightened apartment building windows through visual language. The storyline encapsulated within eight artworks melts the author’s personal experience and outlines the features of her close ones. His ongoing interest in engaging with the multitude of agents present in the everyday of his practice working as an assistant in artist studios in London offers an opportunity to reflect on past work whilst simultaneously using it as a source for producing new iterations and interpretations. Lismanis’ exhibition at LOOK Gallery is an assemblage of pre-existing material and conceptual elements developed for (as well as rejected from) previous projects that have been revised and reworked during the pandemic. These will be exhibited alongside newly produced material. The artist’s work encompasses media such as photography (both his own and found photographs) as well as supplies and scraps leftover from producing photographic images. These are rearranged into collages and spray-painted to reference to the urban environment his practice takes place in. The material presented in this exhibition has evolved out of a continuous use of photographic and artistic production paraphernalia. Consequently, Lismanis’ unwavering commitment to materials, production conditions, studio and exhibition spaces play a fundamental role in his practice, which results in an open-ended conversation between the subjective every day and the formal qualities of the work. The protagonists of Zahar's works calmly and harmoniously connect with the rhythm of the surrounding nature, thus distancing themselves from the nervous tension of the city. The author depicts idyllic moments in which we can cool off, recover from the nervous pace of the world and restore our inner balance. The artist's observations include both urban and idyllic dreams of spending time in the countryside and nature.
